I may or may not have just wanted an excuse to play this song, however I do believe it has a tiny bit of relevance to my final blog post.
The Internet of Things, it seems, has begun to take its own life force. We are not just comparing media use to our nervous system any more but rather the media is creating its own nervous system.
"The world of matter has become a great nervous system"
- Nathan Hawthorne
Think Apple, pretty soon there could be an entire Apple system that runs your home. I don't know if anyone else was a little frightened in this weeks lecture but I certainly was. Trying to understand that one day our media usage could rule our life, make decisions for us, even choose your friends, it's a scary thought.
Now that information is free from physical carriers and we can carry around that information in our pockets, to me that screams ADDICTION! But what if it isn't an addiction? Merely just the next station on the train of life.

We have stopped being the most active users online, it is now media tools and objects that have the capacity to talk to one another. As Ted referenced in the lecture:
"Entities take their form and acquire their attributes as a result of their relations with other entities"
-John Law
Without trying to bring out the Sci-Fi nerd in me I will end by saying this, I already have a relationship with my laptop, perhaps it loves me back...?
To all the DIGC202 people, thanks for reading and commenting. You have been a truly great audience. The countdown to my levels are complete.
Au revoir.
Great post Dimity! Woah the semester has gone so fast.. Who says its your last post maybe cause your computer may love you back that it will post a blog for you..? Who knows..
ReplyDeleteI guess the internet of things is a scary thing but with the rate that technology is advancing is it really that much of a surprise..? I guess time will tell!
After reading a few different blogs for this week, what has reoccurred over and over again (even in my own blog) is the feeling of being scared. It seems we were all freaked out about what we've learnt about!
ReplyDeleteI like how you talked about an Apple system operating households. Of course this Apple house would be a closed system (lol!). I could just see the google vs apple war going from phones to household objects. There will be closed and open system households in the future and those in a future class of digc202 will be talking about system networks within households and not mobiles!
Maybe it is the next station in our lives but one thing is apparent in me is that I don't want change. There is a convenience in this kind of technology but of course at a price. This being privacy and I will even include laziness. I'm already lazy as it is and having a household like the one we saw in the lecture would just make me lazier in the end! I'll be paying my computer with extra ram and hard drive space and in return it will write my assignments for me. The future is scary but then again my computer writing my paper for me is pretty cool....
